DOCC At St. Matthew’s - A Journey Into the Heart of Christian Community
St. Matthew's is growing in so many ways - in numbers, in our spirit of welcome, in our stewardship, in our outreach and service to the world, and in our spirituality. The Holy Spirit truly is at work among us, calling us to deepen our experience of God and of Christian community. Last fall we answered the Spirit's call with a new experience for adults at St. Matthew's - Disciples of Christ in Community ("DOCC.") DOCC (it sounds like “dock”) is a fourteen-week journey into the heart of Christian faith and community. DOCC is a learning experience, but it's not primarily about imparting information. DOCC's main focus isn't on theology or Scripture, but on love - the limitless, unconditional, love of God that the New Testament calls "agape." The Rector's Bible Study: Galatians or Gauls?
Get ready to read what may be Paul at his best! Certainly he tells us more about himself in the letter to the Galatians. I believe there are hidden meanings in this letter that will amaze you. We’ll also discover that Luther didn’t read it very well. We’ll do better! |
Emmaus
Emmaus is small groups 6-12 parishioners who meet weekly. We welcome visitors who wish to come "see what it is all about", as well as members who wish to sign up for a covenant period of 10 weeks (Sep-Dec, Jan-Easter, Easter-June). Emmaus is a great way to get to meet new people, get to know your fellow parishioners, and engage your spiritual journey. To learn more ... |
Discover the Bible!
The Bible is the Word of God, and the unique, invaluable sourcebook for all Christians on their spiritual journey. It’s also a huge, sprawling, challenging, fascinating and even intimidating book to study and make sense of, and figuring out where to start can be tough! If you’ve been looking for a place to begin your study of Scripture, here’s a great opportunity. The “Discovering the Bible” program is a 30-week series that offers a top-down, big-picture view of the entire Bible. By reading some carefully chosen excerpts, we’ll get a broad sense of the Bible's history, meaning and witness to Jesus Christ. This is an incredibly time-effective way to get a real grasp of the Bible, even if you’ve never opened a Bible before - and you’ll get to connect to other parishioners and deepen your spirituality at the same time! We’ll use the time-tested “Kerygma: Discovering the Bible” study guide. We alternate between the Old Testament and New Testament portions - each portion consists of 15 weekly meetings. You don’t need to have taken the Old Testament “Discovering the Bible” series to participate in the New Testament series. Contact The Rev. Michael Seiler via email or at 310/573-7787 x 123 with questions. |
